Chapter President
Graduate

I am currently a second year PhD student in the School of Plant Sciences, majoring in Plant Pathology. I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico, Cayey campus where I served as a co-founder of the SACNAS chapter, and its secretary for four years. Our chapter focused on helping our communities overcome adversity by providing them with professional development workshops and outreach opportunities, something that I translate directly into my experience as the current president of the UA SACNAS chapter. After completing my PhD degree, my ultimate aim is to return as an active scientist to Puerto Rico in industry, government, and/or academia, and continue to help underrepresented students in STEM fields.

Graduate

I am a PhD candidate in the department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. I study how plant communities are responding to climate change and species invasions using tools from population genetics and community ecology. I also do outreach to try and help communicate science to the public and demonstrate how we can all use the scientific method in our everyday lives.

Chapter Advisor
Assistant Professor, Natural Resources
Assistant Professor, Arid Lands Resources Sciences - GIDP

As a first-generation college graduate with an interest in scientific discovery, I knew that I had a desire to become a scientific researcher. After obtaining my undergraduate degree, I worked as a Research Technician/Specialist before deciding to pursue graduate school. I am now a fifth year Cellular and Molecular Medicine doctoral candidate researching how changes in muscle proteins can lead to disease with the hope of reducing the prevalence of heart disease.
